Chapter Thirteen

Ava

The smell of ginger fills the kitchen as I putter around, making gingerbread men and spiced muffins. I love baking almost as much as I love owning the bookstore.

“Today is a good day. Today is the best day. Today is the day I will fall in love.”

I sing out loud, not even sure where the words are coming from. I’m still riding on a high from the previous evening, when Theo and I shared an intimate moment together. I still get chills thinking about his ghost story, but I could tell, based on the way he told it and the way he looked at me afterwards, that it was something he’d never shared with anyone else. It made me feel special, which, admittedly, it shouldn’t have, because it wasn’t like he declared his undying love to me. But I still felt like it created a moment between the two of us.

And then we kissed.

I’d been absolutely out of my mind, squeezing his cock, which was thicker and longer than I had assumed Theo was packing. And while I didn’t have that much experience with men, I was pretty confident he was much larger than most.

Smiling to myself, I open the fridge and grab some milk. I’m going to make eggnog, even though it isn’t yet Christmas season. I pull out a large bowl, and, as I do, I hear my phone ringing.

Grabbing it without looking at the screen, I sing out, “Happy fall!”

“Ava, is that you?”

My heart races as I recognize the voice.

“Theo?”

“Yeah, it’s me.”

“How are you?”

“I’m good. What are you up to?”

“I’m just making gingerbread men,” I say with a laugh. “To sell tomorrow in the store.”

“Oh, I do love me a gingerbread man.”

“You can come over and have one if you want.”

He chuckles. “I don’t want to eat away your profits. But I’m not going to bring up money again.”

“Good,” I tease. “So, how can I help you?”

I feel oddly polite, not really knowing what else to say.

“I was calling to ask you out on an official date.”

I go silent. Happy. Surprised. Unsure how to respond.

“I didn’t want you to think I was playing hard to get, like last time, when I waited too long to call you.”

“Well, you never called me last time. I just saw you at the bonfire.”

“Yeah.” He laughs. “After that, I didn’t want you to think this was just a game. So, I was wondering if you’d like to grab dinner tonight?”

“Perhaps… Why don’t you come over? We can make gingerbread men and hang out and watch a movie.”

“While I would love to do that…” He pauses. “Don’t you live with Arabella and Aria?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Well, I like spending time with you, but I don’t want them to think I’m monopolizing your time. Plus, if things get a little more… amorous, I don’t want⁠—”

“What do you mean by ‘a little bit more amorous’?” I ask, giggling.

“Well, if we start making out, I don’t necessarily want them there, watching like two eager high school kids.
